What is Squint?
A squint or Strabismus as is medically called is a visible eye abnormality. Here a patient’s Eyes appear not looking in the same direction or NOT Seeing in a coordinated manner. Put simply, in a Squint condition, while a patients eye aims to focus on a particular object, the other eye doesn’t seemingly go along the same looking path. The eyes, neck and even head alignment is at times confusing and may go in opposite directions. The eyeballs could appear looking outwardly or inwardly and in other cases upwardly / downwardly. Remember the Squint (Strabismus or tropia ) is not just an appearance problem but could very well affect a child’s vision.
Types Of Squint
Treatment: Squints are of various types. Each type has its different causes, symptoms, presentations and appropriate treatment plan. Also, not all cases of Squint or Tropia require treatment. Often a simple prescribed glass or doing a specific set of regular eye exercises can prove quite useful. In both cases though, only a qualified, experienced eye specialist should be consulted. If not diagnosed and treated in time, squints can also progress into a condition called LAZY EYE and trigger permanent damage to vision. Amblyopia, as it is also called, requires medical attention for Vision correction and recovery. Early treatment ensures better outcomes regarding binocular status as well.

FAQs
Squint surgery, also known as strabismus surgery, is a procedure that corrects misalignment of the eyes by adjusting the position of the eye muscles.
Squint surgery is typically recommended for individuals with persistent eye misalignment that cannot be corrected through non-surgical methods like glasses, eye exercises, or vision therapy.
Your surgeon will provide specific instructions, but preparation may include fasting before the surgery, discontinuing certain medications, and arranging for transportation to and from the hospital or clinic.
The choice of anesthesia (general or local) depends on the patient’s age, health, and the complexity of the surgery. Children and some adults may require general anesthesia, while others may have the surgery under local anesthesia with sedation.
The duration of squint surgery varies depending on the specific procedure and the complexity of the case. On average, it can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.
Risks and complications can include infection, bleeding, double vision, overcorrection, undercorrection, and scarring. Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you before the procedure.
Recovery times can vary, but most patients can return to normal activities within a few days to a few weeks. It’s common to experience some discomfort, swelling, and redness after surgery.
An eye patch is not always necessary after squint surgery. Your surgeon will determine if an eye patch or other post-operative measures are needed based on your specific case.
Some improvement in eye alignment may be visible immediately after surgery, but it can take several weeks to months for the final results to become apparent as the eye muscles heal and adjust.
In some cases, multiple surgeries may be required to achieve the desired alignment. This will be discussed with you by your surgeon.
It’s important to choose a board-certified ophthalmologist or strabismus specialist with experience in squint surgery. You can ask for referrals from your primary eye care provider or conduct online research to find a reputable surgeon.
Not much post operative care is required after squint surgery, you can resume your work next day.
